tiny tools
Some tiny tools that I have made and been involved in making.
- forestscapes - soundscaping software scripts for supercollider and norns
- image explorer - browser-based tools for the visual exploration of image collections
- tiny image composer - turn a handful of images into lower resolution composites
- vclip - command line tool to compile randomly selected video clips from a folder
- zeehaven - convert social media data from zeeschuimer into csv for analysis
My approach to tiny toolmaking has been inspired by:
- research on pluralising critical technical practices
- web-based tools from Digital Methods Initiative and médialab at Sciences Po - which tend to be very simple and have been developed with a spirit of “methodological diversity and epistemological plurality”
- Unix philosophy of “do one thing well”
- Everest Pipkin’s tinytools.directory - an “open source, experimental, and tiny tools roundup”
- Exchanges with Tim Cowlishaw on tiny tools as “care-ful software practice”
