Pallab Deb, Liliana Bounegru, Kumar Sambhav Shrivastava and I will discuss “how data becomes public through the social practices, institutions, infrastructures and communities involved in producing, interpreting, sharing and contesting it” - drawing on Public Data Cultures and the Data Journalism Handbook as well as work with Land Conflict Watch, Nutgraph and the Public Data Lab.

This session explores the social and cultural dimensions of public data: how data is produced, interpreted, shared, contested, and made meaningful through relationships between communities, institutions, and the state.

The discussion will be moderated by Pallab, and will revolve around jonathan w. y. gray’s book on, Public Data Cultures. It will also explore related work by Kumar Sambhav Shrivastava and Liliana Bounegru on data practices, data cultures, and the ways in which data is shaped through collective, journalistic, and state arrangements.
